Convenient online hunter safety course for California hunters

With hunting seasons underway, reminds California hunters of the need for hunter education. California law requires first-time resident hunters, regardless of age, to complete hunter education training before purchasing a hunting license. Instead of the traditional 10-hour classroom hunter safety course, students can choose the online course followed by a 4-hour session led by a certified hunter education instructor.

DALLAS —'s online hunter safety course material is free to the public. Students take the fast-paced hunter safety course online from the convenience of home as it fits their schedules. When they complete the online course, students pay $19.50 to print out a voucher that admits them to the in-person follow-up class. Successful students are then eligible to purchase a hunting license. (,

In addition to the online hunter education option the California Department of Fish and Game has chosen to provide classroom hunter safety course manuals since 2005. students learn the same hunter education material, whether it's taught in the 10- hour classroom course or online. California students can choose the hunter education learning method that's right for them.

About 30,000 students complete a California hunter education course each year, and the statistics show hunter education training is a success. Hunting accidents have been significantly reduced since hunter education became mandatory.

Since 2002, more than one million students have taken a hunter safety course.
