Growing up, Kurt Kalkomey spent many weekends fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast with his dad. His passion for angling and boating would not only turn into a lifelong hobby, but it also would pave the way to a career.
Kurt co-founded Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc., a dynamic company employing more than 30 people who are dedicated to providing outdoor recreational safety training in all 50 states. The company works with state government agencies and organizations to develop state-specific safety courses for boaters, hunters, snowmobilers, and off-road vehicle operators who are interested in learning how to be safer and more knowledgeable.
Kurt has many years of experience in the outdoor industry that began with owning a successful marine dealership. From 1984 to 1993, he managed Irving Marine Supply Inc., which marketed power boats and a full line of marine parts and accessories. Through his dealership, Kurt was active in training new boaters, which became a launching pad for founding Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc.
Service to the outdoor community has been an important part of Kurt's life. He has served on the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators Education &Awareness Committee since 1998. Also, Kurt was president of Share a Lunker Inc., a subsidiary of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, from 1990 to 1994. His service to Share a Lunker (now the Toyota ShareLunker Program) included advising the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on issues related to its catch-and-release program and raising funds to support Texas fisheries.
In addition, Kurt served on the board of directors for the Boating Trades Association of Texas from 1988 to 1993, including a term as secretary/treasurer from 1993 to 1994. He was an active member of the legislative, special projects and Dallas trade show committees. From 1989 to 1993, Kurt was a delegate for the National Dealer Council for Outboard Marine Corp. As director/treasurer of the Dallas International Boat Show Inc., Kurt also participated on a board that managed two annual consumer boat shows in Dallas from 1990 to 1993.
Kurt earned his bachelor of science degree in biology (wildlife science) with a minor in forestry from Stephen F. Austin State University. He also holds a master of science degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in aquatic ecology with a minor in applied statistics.
